What we're experiencing right now...vortexgods,

What we're experiencing right now is, I think, akin to what was going on in France during the reign of Louis XV -- which is to say a Revolt of the Rich. They are refusing to be taxed to fund the government; any increase in revenue to staunch the red ink must come from the masses.

This isn't just in the United States -- or France, for that matter -- this is global. The rich are in many cases literally walling themselves off from the masses and demanding tribute from them. To a surprising degree they're getting it, too.

Living standards for the majority are being forced down in all the developed world in order that the well-upholstered plutocrats will suffer no inconvenience or reduction in wealth and privilege whatsoever. In fact, as others are reduced in circumstances, many of the well off see their situation improve, in some cases dramatically.

As I see it, based on history and human nature, it's not a stable or sustainable situation. There will come a breaking point, but when and how is difficult to say.

The consequences, however, are not all that hard to figure out. As you say, the energy is on the right, and this leads inevitably to rightist populism, most clearly expressed in the Fascist and Nazi movements back in the day. But they in turn were at least partially influenced by the Napoleonic era. Which, of course, was a consequence of the French Revolution. Which was catalyzed by the American Revolution, which in turn...

We can trace this thread back a long way!

The pity is that once this pattern gets going, there's no way to stop it.

Cheers... well...

ChéChé Pasahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01926630891287949373noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2304235862479840318.post-67710676943784977862010-11-24T19:38:03.233-08:002010-11-24T19:38:03.233-08:00This is very interesting. I've been operating...This is very interesting. I've been operating under the assumption that when the system can no longer respond to crises, as the current American system can't, some kind of revolution must eventually occur.

However, I wonder if a more relevant crises would be the rise of the Nazis, who the Junkers hoped to use and ended up being consumed by.

All the energy seems to be on the Right.

On the other hand, perhaps France will end up leading America as America once led France. I still have hope.vampyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14660319794133128873noreply@blogger.com
